Prologue

            A bright half-moon cast brilliant silver light over a deep stone hollow, and the soothing sound of trickling water sounded from inside the empty cave.

            Doveheart, along with the other clan medicine cats, slowly padded towards the Moonpool. The pale gray she-cat took a deep breath. This was her first time going to the Moonpool without her mentor, Grayfoot. Grayfoot was FireClan’s medicine cat before she was, and he had just died recently from a badger attack.

            “Good luck,” Blueshine, the ForestClan medicine cat, whispered to her. Her voice was sweet and gentle, and her soft blue gaze felt comforting to the young she-cat.

            Doveheart dipped her head gratefully and took another step towards the sacred lake. She crouched down and took a sip of the sparkling water, and then lied onto the cold grass and gently closed her eyes, ready to share dreams with StarClan.

            The other cats followed, and Doveheart could feel their warm bodies lying close to her. A soft purr escaped her throat, and feeling rather embarrassed, she silently pleaded to her warrior ancestors that no one had heard her.

            Once the young she-cat had drifted into a deep sleep, strange scents started to surround her. She rose from her sleeping position and stared in awe at the ghost-like cats that stood in front of her. Their pelts were sparkling and appeared to be filled with stars, and even the youngest kit would know that these were StarClan cats.

            “Greetings, Doveheart,” a familiar voice spoke. Doveheart recognized the cat instantly, her eyes opened wide in surprise.

            “Grayfoot!” she mewed happily, bouncing towards him. Suddenly she skidded to a halt, and looked around her to see that the other StarClan cats were staring at her. She felt hot under her fur as she felt their bright eyes burning into her pelt. I must look ridiculous, she thought. Her bright blue gaze fixed onto her paws and her head bowed in shame, she slowly backed away from the former medicine cat.

            “I’m thankful that you’re so enthusiastic to see me again, Doveheart, but right now you need to be serious,” Grayfoot meowed. Although his tone was indifferent, his eyes glowed with gratitude towards the young medicine cat.

            Another StarClan cat then stepped forward, her bright fur shimmering in the moonlight. Doveheart could’ve sworn that she saw a glimpse of fear flash across her pale eyes. “A cold-blooded darkness will take over the forest,” she prophesied, “unless stopped by four cats of unimaginable powers. One is torn between fire and ice; one has a pelt of everlasting glow; one has a heart of pure gold; and one may join the darkness instead of defeat it.”

            “I-I don’t understand…” Doveheart trailed off, her voice shaking with worry.

            “You will find out soon enough,” Grayfoot assured her, his pelt starting to fade away, along with those of the other StarClan cats.

            “No! Grayfoot, please don’t leave-”

            “We will meet again…” Grayfoot meowed, his voice barely above a whisper.

            With that, they faded away, leaving Doveheart feeling utterly confused, having no idea of what life-changing prophecy was yet to come.
